Our Comfort and Joy

Dear God,
let your Word
shine in our hearts
by your Holy Spirit.
Make it
so bright and warm
that we always find
our comfort and joy
in it.
Amen.

For Your Praise and Glory and Love and Thanks

Dear Lord Christ,
give us your Holy Spirit and gifts
not for our own glory
but for the service and edifying
of all Christendom.
This is the only reason,
you give your Spirit,
as St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12,
“you give to each one
according to your will,”
that is,
not for our our shame
or sin or vanity,
but for your praise and glory
and love and thanks
for your inexpressible grace and gifts
forever.
Amen.

Source: Martin Luther, translated for A Collection of Prayers from Die Gebete Luthers#200.

Luther did not quote 1 Corinthians 12:11 directly. In the prayer, the quote reads “so that [the gifts] may be distributed equally and correctly.” ESV’s translation of 1 Corinthians 12 is “All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.” Luther seems to be recalling and summarizing the whole chapter.

Give Me Your Holy Spirit and Power

Dearest Lord Christ,
you have enlightened my heart
with your truth.
Give me also
your Holy Spirit
and power,
that I may know and do
what pleases you.
Amen.

Original in German:

Lieber Herr Christe, der du mein hertz mit deiner warheit erleuchtet hast, wöllest mir auch deinen H[eiligen] Geyst und krafft geben, zu thun und zu lassen, was deinem gnedigen willen wolgefellet.

Translation note:

“..that I may know and do what pleases you.” is more literally translated “that I may do and allow what pleases your gracious will.

Nunc Dimittis and Prayer

Lord,
now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation
that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.
Luke 2:29-32 (ESV)

Almighty and eternal God,
we humbly pray,
grant that we may know
and praise your dear Son
as holy Simeon did,
who took him up in his arms,
spiritually knew and confessed him;
through the same, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

800px-lucas_cranach_d-c384-_-_martin_luther2c_1528_28veste_coburg29_28cropped29Almighty and eternal God,
we pray that you would
uphold us

A Prayer of Confession

O my dearest Lord Jesus Christ,
you know my poor soul
and my great transgressions,
and I cry out to you alone
with an open heart.
I am sorry
that I do not have
will or intentions as I should
and I fall behind daily,
for I am a poor, sick sinner.
You know
that I want to have good will and good intentions,
but my foe strikes
and leads me captive.
Redeem me,
a poor sinner,
according to your divine will.
Deliver me from all evil
and all afflictions.
Strengthen and
increase in me
true Christian faith.
Give me grace
to faithfully
love my neighbor
as myself
with all my heart,
and to love him as a brother.
Give me patience and perseverance
in all persecution and trouble.
You told St. Peter
not to forgive only seven times,
and you have called us to come to you
for consolation.
So I come with the assurance
of what you have pledged,
and I cry to you
as my true Pastor
and Bishop of my soul
in all my needs.
You alone know
how and when
I need your help.
Your will be done,
and your name be praised forever.
Amen.

Give Us Your Strength and Protection

800px-lucas_cranach_d-c384-_-_martin_luther2c_1528_28veste_coburg29_28cropped29

Lord God, heavenly Father,
you know that we are set
in the midst of so many and great dangers,
that by reason of the frailty of our nature
we cannot always stand upright:
Grant us such strength and protection,
to support us in all danger,
and carry us through all temptations;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
