Prayer of Good Courage

Lord God,
you have called your servants
to ventures of which
we cannot see the ending,
by paths as yet untrodden,
through perils unknown.
Give us faith to go out
with good courage,
not knowing where we go,
but only that your hand
is leading us
and your love
supporting us,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The call of Abraham

O Lord God, who hast called thy servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown: Give us faith to go out with a good courage, not knowing whither we go, but only that thy hand is leading us, and thy love supporting us; to the glory of thy Name.

A Pleading of the Passion

Passion of Jesus - Wikipedia

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Our Father…

O Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us.
Save us and help us, O Lord.

Jesus, you gave your disciples your body about to be broken and your blood about to be shed;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, in agony of prayer you took the cup of pain;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, betrayed by a kiss;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, forsaken by your friends;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, denied by Peter;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, when bound before Caiaphas, you confessed yourself the Son of God;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, blindfolded, struck, and spat on;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, while your enemies raged with loud voices before the governor, you were silent;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, whom Herod mocked and arrayed in a magnificent robe;
Have mercy on us

Jesus, crowned with thorns;
Have mercy on us

Jesus, brought forth that all might behold their king;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, acclaimed by the people, “Crucify him! Crucify!”
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, rejected for Barabbas;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, condemned to death;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, scourged;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, you were led in shame along the way of sorrow;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, falling beneath the Cross;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, you came to Calvary amid shouts and weeping;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, stripped naked before the people;
Have mercy on us.

Jesus, laid on the cross;
Have mercy on us.

By the nails through hands and feet;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your parched lips;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your ears filled with mockery and scorn;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By the forgiveness of your foes;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your promise to the repentant thief;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your love to your dear disciple;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your broken heart;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your soul all alone;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your spirit commended to your Father;
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your death;
Good Lord, deliver us.

From all evil and mischief; from sin, from the crafts and assaults of the devil; from your wrath, and from everlasting damnation;
Good Lord, deliver us.

From all blindness of heart; from pride, arrogance and hypocrisy; from envy, hatred and malice, and all unkindness;
Good Lord, deliver us.

From fornication and all other deadly sin; and from all the deceits of the world, the flesh and the devil;
Good Lord, deliver us.

From avoiding your service, and distrusting your love; from hatred of your cross and scorn of your passion;
Good Lord, deliver us.

Let us confess our sins, saying together :

We confess to God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,
before the whole company of heaven,
that we have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed,
through our fault, our own fault, our own most grievous fault;
therefore we pray God to have mercy on us.

May God Almighty have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, and forgive you all your sins, deliver you from all evil, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to eternal life. Amen.

The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, absolution, and forgiveness of all your sins, time for true repentance, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his own blood and made us a kingdom and priests to God his Father—to + him be the glory and the power forever.  (Revelation 1:5-6) Amen.

Litany of the Incarnation

gerard_van_honthorst_001

Holy are you, O God, holy, Creator, Father most holy:
Have mercy on us.

Holy are you, O God, holy, most mighty, holy Incarnate:
Have mercy on us.

Holy are you, O God, holy, immortal, holy Life-giver:
Have mercy on us.

Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will toward mankind.

By the angel’s greeting,
grant us your peace.

By Mary’s glad obedience,
grant us your peace.

By the endless joy of Christmas,
grant us your peace.

By the love your mother Mary showed you,
grant us your peace.

By your lowly birth and lodging,
grant us your peace.

By your bed in a manger,
grant us your peace.

By the song of herald angels,
grant us your peace.

By the worship of poor shepherds,
grant us your peace.

By the offering of the Wise Men,
grant us your peace.

By your holy name of Jesus,
grant us your peace.

Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will toward mankind.

Hear your children, O Lord God, and grant that the glad light of the Incarnation may shine throughout the world;
Son of Man, hear us.

That the gospel of your love may win the faith and worship of all hearts;
Son of Man, hear us.

That all kinds of people may know and find their unity at Bethlehem;
Son of Man, hear us.

That the questions of all minds and the desires of all souls may find their peace at Bethlehem:
Son of Man, hear us.

That your birth as truly human may hallow the life of all humanity:
Son of Man, hear us.

That we may ever wear in honor the robe of flesh you have worn:
Son of Man, hear us.

That you for whom an inn could find no room may not again be crowded from our lives:
Son of Man, hear us.

That you for whom a stable-place sufficed will also dwell within our hearts:
Son of Man, hear us.

Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will toward mankind.

Therefore with angels and archangels, with patriarchs and prophets, with Mary and Joseph, with Wise Men and shepherds, with all people and all creatures, let us bless the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest.

For to us a child is born. To us a son is given. The authority to rule will rest on his shoulders;
Hosanna in the highest.

He will be named: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace;
Hosanna in the highest.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God;
Hosanna in the highest.

The Word became flesh and dwelled among us.
Hosanna in the highest.

We have seen his glory, the glory he has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth;
Hosanna in the highest.

God the Father, our maker,
God the + Son, born among us,
God the Holy Spirit, sanctifying us,
bless, preserve, and keep us, evermore and evermore. Amen.

Note: The listing of various events in the life of Christ and the prayer for Christ to give us peace by them is a common feature of many litanies. As we meditate on these events and truths we read and hear from God’s Word, his gospel does indeed grant us peace.

The phrase: “That you for whom a stable-place sufficed…” is taken from stanza 2 of the carol, “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

The phrase: “…evermore and evermore” is from the ancient Christmas hymn “Of the Father’s Love Begotten.”
