Special Rites
The rites below titled Commemoration of the Faithful Departed frame the reading of the names of the faithful departed with Scripture and prayer. This practice has also been called Reading of the Necrology, or Reading of the Names. In some traditions, this is done on the last Sunday of the church year (Totensontag) and in others it is done on New Year’s Eve. Roman Catholics use the term Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (also called All Souls Day) for a solemn festival on November 2 for the faithful departed who have not been canonized as saints.
