Canticle: A Longer Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God almighty!
Heaven and earth
are full of your glory.

We worship you.
We give you thanks for your marvelous deeds,
Lord God, heavenly King,
God and Father, Almighty Lord.

Jesus Christ, only Son of the most high,
Holy Spirit, Spirit of peace, truth and grace,
to you, eternal God, be praise for all your works.

Your might is eternal,
and your love unwavering.
Look with mercy on your people
who gather in your sanctuary to worship you,
to thank you for all your benefits for body and soul,
to implore your grace
to enlighten us in knowledge of you
and to instruct our hearts,
that we may bring the holy offerings
of devout obedience to you.

This canticle seems to blend the Trisagion, an opening hymn in Eastern Orthodox worship, with the Gloria in Excelsis, along with some other elements.

O Christ, our Lord and our eternal Redeemer,

A Prayer Reflection on Psalm 73

comeuntome Lord Jesus,
your parting words to your disciples
were, “Surely I am with you always,”
and then you ascended
to sit at your Father’s right hand.

“Yet I am always with you.
You hold me by my right hand.
With your guidance you lead me,
and afterward, you will take me to glory.
Who else is there for me in heaven?
And besides you, I desire no one else on earth..”

You came to bear our infirmities,
griefs, and sorrows.
You healed many people of their sicknesses
of body and spirit,
and you restored sinners
with your words of forgiveness:

Awaken Us from the Grave of our Sins

Remembering Jan Hus

Jan Hus (John Huss) was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415. About a hundred years before Luther, Hus was defending the authority of Scripture, and declaring that where the Word is, the true church is. According to legend, when he was about to be executed he said, “Today you roast a goose. (Hus is the Bohemian word for goose.) But in a hundred years a swan will sing whom you will not be able to silence.” A few of his prayers from the time of his execution have been preserved for us:

Lord Jesus Christ, I wish to bear most patiently and humbly for your Gospel’s sake and the preaching of your Word, this dire, ignominious, and cruel death.

Have mercy on me, O God, and in you, O Lord, do I put my trust.

O Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me.

Lord, into your hands I commend my spirit.
