The Praying with the Readings series strives to create Prayers of the Church (Prayers of Intercession, Prayers of the People) using classic forms and presenting the needs of God’s people in fresh ways. Prayers for each Sunday and Major Festival are composed of several petitions that reflect on the thoughts in the readings for the day.
The prayers are written for my denomination’s (WELS) version of the Revised Common Lectionary. The Gospels and Sunday themes should agree with the standard RCL readings most of the time, especially in the festival half of the year. Even if the Scriptures that are read are not all quoted in the prayers, the prayers will still be rich in biblical language.
A chart for use with older lectionaries (Christian Worship 1993, ILCW/Lutheran Book of Worship 1978 and Lutheran Worship 1982) is included.
